A postpartum doula is a trained, non-medical support person that provides postnatal care for parents in the postpartum period and their babies. Most doulas in Canada must attend a vocational school or training by a certifying organisation which includes in-person training, a lot of studying, tests, a final examination, and supporting families to gather experience and feedback. After that, they become members of a provincial organisation (AOD in Ontario) and get liability insurance. They must also renew their CPR-C training often.
If you are looking for support to navigate the postpartum period with a trained, experienced professional, a postpartum doula is the best choice!
A doula can be hired during for day shifts or overnight to help care for baby so that you can get some rest or get tasks done. Your doula is always open to share tips on infant care, breastfeeding techniques, babywearing and support restorative care for the parent who gave birth. Benefits of having a postpartum doula include:
Professionally trained to care for baby while parents rest
While baby sleeps, your doula can help out at home while always watching baby - light housework tasks such as tidying up, moping, meal or snack prep
If you had gave birth recently through the belly, your postpartum doula can help bringing you meals in bed, get to and from the washroom, prepare your bandage change, keep you hydrated, bring and even hold baby on your body for easier breastfeeding
For clients who need postpartum care for parent(s) and baby. It includes:
8-hour shift during daytime or overnight (overnight hours are considered shifts scheduled between 8pm-8am)
Baby care: feeding, diapering, bathing, soothing, playing, sleep support
Parent care: movement support, bringing over meals, drinks and items, care tips
Light housework and meal prep
Price: CAD $280 8-hour day
CAD $350 8-hour night
*Please note that sometimes doulas can accommodate shorter 4 or 6-hour day shifts depending on client location and doula availability.
For families who seek care for their toddler (or older child) while they go to the hospital for the birth of the sibling. It includes:
8-hour minimum shift (sibling care during birth is based on personalised, long-hour contracts)
Maximum 48h of continuous support
Optional 24/7 on-call period from 38 weeks onward (higher fees than scheduled births)
Childcare: feeding, diapering/changing, bathing, soothing, playing, sleep support
Light housework and meal prep
Outings to nearby parks if feasible
Price: varies depending on total number of hours and needs, check prices of regular shifts as a guide
When babies are over 6 month old and parents may not be present in the house at the time of care. It includes:
5-8-hour shift during daytime (shorter shifts are only available for areas very close to the doula's location and depend on doula's availability)
Childcare: feeding, diapering, bathing, soothing, playing, sleep support
Light housework and meal prep
Price: CAD $30-35/h
Not only doulas can help you set up and support you during breastfeeding sessions (positioning tips, latch, snacks, hydration, holding baby), but they can take care of everything else related to baby right after the feeding session is over, so that you can use your hours in between feeds to get more rest or accomplish tasks on your to-do list (e.g. eating, showering).
Yes! While working a postpartum shift at your place, I can prepare meals there with the ingredients provided in the house. For safety reasons, it is best to cook in the client’s kitchen using their own utensils and ingredients, so that you know exactly what is going into your food. If you have allergies, please notify the doula beforehand.
Please note that some doulas may have personal restrictions on foods or ingredients they won't handle or cook, so it's best to inquire first with the doula you are requesting.
Doulas by default will clean everything related to the baby care that is needed or got soiled while they are there (food fallen on the floor, utensils and bottles used, diapers in proper bins, etc). When babies sleep, extra housework may include wiping surfaces, sweeping/vacuuming/mopping floors, washing dishes, organising cabinets, tidying up toys/books on the floor, and meal prep.
Any cleaning that requires gloves to perform safely is considered deep cleaning and therefore not part of the doula's work (e.g. toilet cleaning). We please ask our clients to have non-toxic cleaning products if those are to be used by the doulas, in order to protect their health and your family's.
Usually during postpartum appointments while babies are young, parents are inside the house while the doula cares for them. In the event that you are aware you will need to step out during the shift for appointments or errands outside the house, we ask clients that they inform the doula of where the baby's health card is located. If an emergency arises, the doula may need to call 911 first instead of the parent (a real medical emergency requires responders first and foremost), so the health card is necessary.
Unfortunately, personalised meal planning requires a full wellness and health assessment, evaluation, and meal design that takes more hours than are available during baby naps. Please check the nutrition page for separate packages that can tailor a meal plan to your specific postpartum recovery and/or breastfeeding needs.
Our night fees are higher than the daytime fees because of how disruptive they are physically and mentally to the care provider - your doula. If your doula must stay awake most of the night for baby care and house work, they can't take any sort of work the next day while they recover their missing sleep hours. Please reach out if you desire to switch packages and you may only pay the difference. Please note that some doulas only work day time, so if the doula you hired does not do overnight shifts, switching to another doula will not be possible last minute (within 5 days of the intended shift).
Since January 2024, Sun Life Life has approved that Doula School certified doulas (formerly Doula Training Canada) are on the list of approved providers whose clients can use their benefits for coverage IF they have that coverage in their plan! Doula School is the certifying organisation for 3 our of our 4 doulas. For some Sun Life clients, doula coverage would be included as part of their enhanced Personal Spending Account (PSA), under "Health products and services > maternity services and accessories (such as Doulas, Midwives and classes)". Other clients may be allowed to use their Health Spending Account (HSA) on doula services of any kind, and depending on your package, the available HSA could be CAD$250-500 to offset your doula costs.
We recommend 2 approaches. First, consider adding a Postpartum Doula Fund to your baby registry, and then gathering hand-me-downs for most baby items instead. When you send your registry to friends and family ahead of your baby shower, make sure to make a special note that you would prefer a cash gift so that you can enjoy with wonderful service that would make a big impact on your pregnancy, birth experience and start of your parenthood journey. Second, feel free to approach us to discuss how to split the package fee in smaller installments, specially if you are booking ahead for a long Sibling Package.
Yes. The options given in the former 2 questions still don't necessarily suit all types of families, and we believe that birth support should be as accessible as possible while still respecting the value and amount of work our doulas put in. For those in the community who are in a tight financial situation, please note that our prices have a sliding scale using the Green Bottle Method.
The Green Bottle Method is a tool for economic solidarity created by Alexis J. Cunningfolk along with an explanatory graphic of 3 financial tiers (see image below). Since not everyone is in the same financial situation, services can reflect this by offering pricing tiers, thus bringing a little more economic justice on the table. Let us know where you fall to adjust pricing.
We are more than happy to discuss individual realities via e-mail or through the FREE discovery call that we offer for all services.
