Childbirth Taught by Doulas

The work of a Doula is, in great part, an educator job. For all prenatal sessions included in birth packages as consultations, doulas prepare teaching materials to educate their clients in: birth physiology, hormones and their chemistry, mind-body connection during labour, medical and non-medical interventions (and how they may affect our bodies, our labour and our babies), comfort measures and coping mechanisms, how to use breathwork, labour tools and options, anatomy and pushing positions, and more. These same materials can be adapted and expanded to suit private groups in a small "classroom" setting. This is a great option for those parents who want the doula knowledge and experience but not the hands-on support during childbirth.

Childbirth Curriculum

Each class is divided into 2 Units |and last 2h on average, sometimes a little longer. Breakdown of class topics:

Class 1: Introduction to Childbirth
Class 2: Interventions and Self-Advocacy
Class 3: Full Birth Support
Class 4: Postpartum and Baby Care

All participating parents/couples are provided with the learning materials and workbook to take home, as well as props and other tools necessary to learn and practice on the spot.

Total of 8 learning units, 8-10h.

Small Group (4 families)

For a small group of expecting friends who want a private course. It includes:

4 classes of 2h each over 4 weeks or a full weekend (2 days with lunch breaks)
All printed course manuals and guides to take home
Printouts of evidence-based articles

Props and tools for in-class practice

Price: CAD $200/couple

Medium-Large Group (+4 families)

Bigger groups may require rental space, therefore the fee can only be reduced a small percentage:

4 classes of 2h each over 4 weeks or a full weekend (2 days with lunch breaks)

Interventions digital file (PDF)

FAQ

Can I get more details about topics covered?

Sure you can! Head to our contact page to book a free discovery call and select that you are interested in the childbirth classes. After the call -where you can ask as many questions as you need-, we will send the Childbirth Course Package as a digital file that you can share with other parents if you wish to organise a private group with them.

Are Doula Services covered by insurance?

Since January 2024, Sun Life Life has approved that Doula School certified doulas (formerly Doula Training Canada) are on the list of approved providers whose clients can use their benefits for coverage IF they have that coverage in their plan! Doula School is the certifying organisation for 3 our of our 4 doulas. For some Sun Life clients, doula coverage would be included as part of their enhanced Personal Spending Account (PSA), under "Health products and services > maternity services and accessories (such as Doulas, Midwives and classes)". Other clients may be allowed to use their Health Spending Account (HSA) on doula services of any kind, and depending on your package, the available HSA could be CAD$250-500 to offset your doula costs.

What other ways can I use to make it easier to afford the cost of a doula package?

We recommend 2 approaches. First, consider adding a Doula Fund to your baby registry, and then gathering hand-me-downs for most baby items instead. When you send your registry to friends and family ahead of your baby shower, make sure to make a special note that you would prefer a cash gift so that you can enjoy with wonderful service that would make a big impact on your pregnancy, birth experience and start of your parenthood journey. Second, feel free to approach us to discuss how to split the package fee in smaller installments, specially if you are booking way ahead of the classes.

Do you have package option for families with tighter financial means?

Yes. The options given in the former 2 questions still don't necessarily suit all types of families, and we believe that birth support should be as accessible as possible while still respecting the value and amount of work our doulas put in. For those in the community who are in a tight financial situation, please note that our prices have a sliding scale using the Green Bottle Method.

The Green Bottle Method is a tool for economic solidarity created by Alexis J. Cunningfolk along with an explanatory graphic of 3 financial tiers (see image below). Since not everyone is in the same financial situation, services can reflect this by offering pricing tiers, thus bringing a little more economic justice on the table. Let us know where you fall to adjust pricing.
